Saturday's Week 0 Game vs. Jackson

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 11:46
Take your lawn chairs! Evidently (and surprisingly) the Riverton-Jackson JV (11am) and Varsity (1pm) games will be held on Jackson's practice fields adjacent to their stadium. Their stadium's new turf will not be ready for Saturday's game.

Change in times for Football Mini Camp

Posted by Keith Bauder in RHS Football at 18:32
I am excited to be coaching the Wolverine Football Team and look forward to the upcoming season. We will be holding our own football camp July 16,17, 21-23, and 28-31. I realize everyone’s summer is extremely busy, but I strongly recommend that everyone who wants to play football next year attend football camp. We will start to install the offense, defense, and special teams that we will be running in the upcoming seasons.

It is important that athletes dedicate themselves to the weight room. When athletes lift, they get stronger, their self-confidence improves, the risk of injury is reduced, and their level of performance increases in every sport they play.

I look forward to seeing you in July.

Sincerely

Coach McCormick

Wolverines Clobber Tigers

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 10:49
Behind a balanced offensive attack that left a tired Lander defense on the field for much of the game, the Riverton Wolverines closed out their 2007 season with a 19-8 win over its cross-county rivals.

With 12 seniors playing their final game, the Wolverines handed the Tigers their 17th consecutive loss in front of packed Tonkin Stadium. And, adding a bit more drama, the win for the Wolverines may be the last game played on the field that has hosted home games for Riverton since 1939 should the upcoming bond issue pass.

Seniors playing their final game for Riverton were Daniel Bessey, Kyle Blumenshine, Lucca Bluthner, Tyler Larson, Tom Osborne, Zack Howerton, Trevor Wilson, Adam Simon, Corey Smith, Mike Johnson, Chris Nigera and Ryan Weber.

After the game, head coach Brant Nyberg challenged Wolverine underclassmen to battle their next opponent - the weights in the weight room - tough during the time they have leading up until the 2008 Wolverines take to the field.

Green River's Big Plays Stop Wolverines

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 10:29
The Riverton Wolverines suffered its seventh straight loss Friday night at Green River 34-13. The loss sets up the final game of the season for the Wolverines against the Lander Tigers, also 0-7, this coming Friday night at Tonkin Stadium.

In Green River, three big plays by Green River's sophomore quarterback Drew Martinez doomed the Wolverines. The speedy Martinez was the quickest running threat the Wolverines faced this year, and Riverton could not stop the speedster from turning the corner at critical times in the first half. Green River had a 21-0 halftime advantage.

This coming Friday's game against the Tigers will be interesting. The Wolverines have shown an ability to move the ball against the Tigers - chewing up yards in last season's dramatic 21-20 win over Lander. The weather last year was cold and snowey. The forecast for this Friday's game is much better - sunny and mid 50's at game time.

To win, many believe that the Wolverines will have to stop two LVHS seniors - quarterback Nick Nell and receiver Jared Mowrey. And, Lander's coach Steve Simpson is quoted in Sunday's Ranger saying "I'm looking forward to it (the game against Riverton). It's a way for us to end the season on a positive note."

The Wolverines should feel differently. Only one other time has a Wolverine team went through a season without a win (2005). And, in 1978, both teams met in Lander and were 0-8 going into the game. The Wolverines prevailed 27-20 and ran the table in their conference schedule the following season and played for a state title.

The community has planned a pep rally for the Wolverines Thursday evening at the new parking lot on the north side of the new activity complex off Sunset at Riverton High School. Also, the Marching Wolverines (band), for the first time in nearly 20 years, will perform its halftime show Friday night.

It should be an emotional night Friday at Tonkin Stadium. It is senior night. Both teams have had tough seasons. Wolverine fans are hoping that this group of athletes can reach inside themselves one final time and play a game filled with pride, emotion and effort in what could be the final game ever played in Tonkin Stadium.

Wolverines Fall To Broncs

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 09:10
Poor pass catching and a tough second half spelled defeat for the Riverton Wolverines Friday night in Sheridan as they fell to the Broncs 23-8. The Wolverines again struggled on offense (punting nine times during the game) and were unable to sustain drives.

The only score for the red and white came as the first half ended. The Sheridan Broncs muffed a Wolverine punt. Tyler Larson then hooked up with Trevor Wilson with 8 seconds left in the half. A two-point conversion made the score 10-8 Sheridan at half time.

The Broncs racked up 350 yards in total offense - much of it through the air on a cold and sometimes windy night.

The Wolverines battle the Wolves in Green River next Friday at 7:00pm. Green River is coming off a 21-20 upset over Evanston.

Wolverines Fall To Trojans

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 23:11
After fighting its way to a 14-7 third quarter lead, the Riverton Wolverines struggled late in the game and fell to the Kelly Walsh Trojans 35-14 Friday night at Tonkin Stadium.

Joe Munsell from Kelly Walsh did the damage with three fourth quarter touchdowns.

Tyler Larson scored both Riverton touchdowns, the first after a frantic series at the end of the first half that included a forty-plus-yard completion to sophomore Angelo Flores that advanced Riverton to the KW two-yard line with six seconds left. The first drive of the third quarter featured a grinding running game led by Daniel Bessy and a mix of the short passing game before Larson scored his second touchdown and gave the Wolverines its first lead of the season.

Kyle Blumenshine led the defense with 27 defensive points.

Up next for the Wolverines is a road trip to Sheridan next Friday night. The Broncs are coming off a loss at Cheyenne Central.

Wolverines Drop Road Game In Gillette

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 22:03
The Riverton Wolverines dropped its fourth consecutive game of the season 35-0 Friday evening in Gillette. Down 14-0 at halftime (the Wolverines gave up a touchdown at the end of the second quarter), the team's defensive performance was better than the final score indicated. The team's performance was especially good in light of the fact that several defensive starters either were injured or played less than full-time nursing injuries. Starters Austin Coyle, Ryan Weber, and Chad Hopkins did not make the trip. And, the offense also looked better at times than it has earlier in the season.

Up next for the Wolverines is Casper Kelley Walsh. The Trojans were clobbered in the annual Oil Bowl by Natrona 49-7. Game time next Friday at Tonkin Stadium is 7pm.

Here is the program's schedule for the upcoming week:
09/25/07 Green River 9th Grade @ Tonkin Stadium Riverton 4:00 PM
09/28/07 Kelly Walsh Varsity @Tonkin Stadium 7:00 PM

Freshmen Wolverines Get First Win

Posted by Brett Watson in RHS Football at 10:39
The Riverton Freshmen football team rolled to their first win of the season after disappointing losses to Evanston and Cody. Against a tough Wind River JV team the Woverines rolled to a 20-6 win. Brandon Jennings got things rolling with a 46 yd touchdown run early in the game. Late in the first quarter, John Reddon hit Jarrett Watson from about 30 yards out to put the Wolverines up 14-0. Jennings closed out the scoring to give the young Wolverines their first win of the season. The Riverton defense played greedy ball and kept the Cougar offense stalled most of the game.

Wolverines Fall To Panthers

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 21:40

The Riverton Wolverines dropped their home opener 30-13 to the defending state 4-A champions Powell Panthers Friday night at Tonkin Stadium.

The Wolverines were able to generate some offense in the 2nd half when they scored their first touchdowns of the season. Trevor Wilson snagged a Tyler Larson pass in the deep corner of the end zone in the fourth quarter for the Wolverine's first score of the season. Derek Miller also scored a late touchdown for the Wolverines.

The defense struggled to defend short fields most of the night.

Up next for the Wolverines is a homecoming game against the Casper Natrona Mustangs next Friday night at Tonkin Stadium. Game time is 7pm. The Mustangs are winless on the season after being beat by Evanston 34-27 and losing in week one to Rock Springs.

Wolverines; Week "One"der

Posted by Brett Watson in RHS Football at 14:50
And "wonder" it was. I wonder what happened to that suffocating defense I witnessed only 6 days prior manhandle a physical GR team; I "wonder" if I, like a lot of others, under-estimated a Douglas team that graduated virtually all their skilled players from last year, a year in which Riverton beat them soundly. I "wonder" if this team now has the heart and soul to put this game behind them and go on to become the team that everybody, including themselves, expected to be.

It was a game that every Riverton fan, coach, and player had to have walked away from shaking their head with lots of questions. Only time will tell if Douglas is really that good of a team, but one thing is for sure, they were definately better than the Wolverines on Friday night. But what happened to that Riverton team that had so much promise coming into the 2007 season. Did we expect too much of them? Or did they simply overlook Douglas and walk on the field with that "we'll win" attitude instead of the "we'll earn a win" attitude they needed. And, possibly, the answer is somewhere in between.

Regardless of the X and O questions of Friday night, this team is now at a crossroads in the season, only one game into it; and unfortunately now the questions are more important to the season as a whole. And they're all going to be part of the "blame game".

I'm sure most of the Riverton contingent walked out of the stadium Friday night trying to place blame for the loss, and that, unfortunately, becomes just like the ol "pin the tail on the donkey" game we all played as kids. Most of the time, we blindly pinned the tail where it didn't belong, but it was pinned on the donkey none the less.

The first thing everyone that has ever coached knows, is that you can only coach the kids to the edge of the field. Once the team steps on that field it becomes execution and heart on the kids' part; and there was definately a lack of both Friday. The playes and coaches can fix those problems; so the success, or lack thereof, of this team for the rest of the season is now in our hands....... the fans....

If we now unite together to criticize the coaching staff we will become the cancer that kills this season, because eventually the kids buy into it then can play with no accountability... which means no execution and heart.

If we remain Riverton fans, and by definition that means supporters of the program win or lose, the kids continue to work hard, the team remains united, and the coaches coach without having to second guess everything, AND this team goes on to reach the goals they set for themselves before the season.

It is now our responsibility to make the call.... I hope it's a good one.

Wolverines Shocked at Douglas

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 23:49

From the weird pre-game when the Douglas announcer either mis-pronounced or didn't announce several Wolverine defensive starters to the opening kickoff that the Bearcats nearly returned for a touchdown, nothing seemed to go the way of the Red and White Friday night in Douglas as Riverton was shut out 28-0.

At times the Wolverine offense was able to sustain drives, but untimely penalties put the skids to any consistent attack. Also critical was the Wolverines inability to convert into points a Douglas fumble on a punt return that resulted in a first-and-goal situation for Riverton as the second quarter started.

The defense also looked good at times but penalties (including several personal fouls) and two big plays, one a hitch and go pass that went over the top of the aggressive Wolverine "D" and the other a long screen pass that both resulted in touchdowns hurt the Wolverines.

Things may not get easier for Riverton as they face defending 4-A state champion Powell next Friday at Tonkin Stadium in their home opener. The Panthers began their season with an easy 42-14 win Friday night on the road in Lovell. Touted to be a passing team, the Panthers ran almost at will against the Bulldogs easily chewing up 10-12 yard gains according to David Peck of the Lovell Chronicle. Game time for the Friday Varsity game is 7pm.

On Thursday the Freshmen Wolverines will take on Cody at 4:30pm at Tonkin Stadium. The Jr. Varsity will also host Cody at 11am on Saturday. The JV game will also be played at Tonkin Stadium.

Wolverines JV Fall To Worland

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 21:13

Although the Wolverine Jr. Varsity jumped out to an early lead as Seth Hosking took a pitch and scored a touchdown on its first possession, the Wolverines couldn't hold the lead and lost 13-10 to Worland Monday evening at Tonkin Stadium.

Now the program sets its sites on Douglas as the Varsity travels to Converse County Friday night. Game time is 7:00pm.

In the photo above, sophomore kicker Cody Blumenshine knocked a 37 yd. field goal through the uprights as time expired in the first half to give the Wolverines a 10-6 halftime advantage.

Week Zero Dual

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 13:56
The Riverton Wolverine defense highlighted play during its week-zero scrimmage against Green River Saturday. Bending but never breaking, the Wolverines shut out the Wolves and scored two touchdowns of their own during the Saturday game at Tonkin Stadium. The Wolverines are preparing for their season opener on Friday evening, August 31, at 7pm in Douglas.

In the photo below, the Wolverine defensive front consisting of Derek Griffin, Austin Coyle, Ryan Webber, Jordan Larson and Travis Barton continually pressured Green River during the scrimmage.

Wolverines; My week "0"pinion

Okay, we need to set the stage.... It was the NFL preseason game of Wyoming High School football, with kids being moved around and coaches playing close to the vest. However, with that said the Wolves and the Wolverines did strap it up, clamp in the mouth pieces, and wanted to win the game.

I think any team on the schedule this year that takes Riverton lightly is in for a head shakingly tough game. Defensively, the Wolverines look as good as I've seen in many years. They definately added the "rine" to the Wolves.... or more accurately the "ring"; because the first thing you'll notice about the 07 defense is that it's loaded with guys that like to ring players bells. The linebacker group, led by Daniel Bessey, really fly around with wreckless abandon and can flat put the stop to a running back. The D line with Travis Barton and Austin Coyle at the bookends were equally as impressive. The GR quarterback saw as much of them as he did his own center. Riverton's sack count had to have been in the double digit and when the guy had time to throw he was throwing on the run. The Wolverine secondary did a good job of coverage and all of them; Wilson, Blumenshine, Osborne, and Rodriguez; can bring the wood when a ball carrier gets loose in the secondary!!

Red White Scrimmage

Posted by Craig Blumenshine in RHS Football at 21:31
The Riverton Wolverines went through a light workout Friday night at Tonkin Stadium in preparation for their week zero scrimmage against Green River on Saturday. The week zero game will begin at 11am at Tonkin Stadium and is free to the public.

Here coach Reggie Miller passes to a Wolverine receiver. Later the rest of the team ran prior to stretching then worked on special teams. The Wolverines concluded the practice as they ran through several offensive and defensive series.
